What is your 2021 new year’s resolution – Is it to cook one new meal each week or to read more books? For my resolution, I decided to try and build a tougher mindset and learn how to find comfort in uncomfortable situations.
Why you may ask? Well the answer is simple really. 2020 was a testing year, it tested our emotional and physical stability – debilitating many with anxiety and causing extreme stress.
So, it is more important than ever to be able to find some comfort in an uncomfortable situation and to have a tough mindset to push us through these difficult times.
There is a television programme called ‘SAS: Who Dares Wins’ which I feel encapsulates how to build a tougher mindset perfectly. The show involves putting ordinary individuals through extreme physical and mental challenges to narrow the group down till only one remains – the one that they deem possesses the ‘toughest mindset’. The participants are under constant mental and physical ‘bombardment’ as they are tested to their limits – it is extreme but it works. As I have this goal but don’t have an SAS veteran yelling at me day in day out – I wanted to take it into my own hands.
See, the overall goal is to start to be able to feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations. This may seem counter-productive to how as humans we want to live as we are all taught to search for comfort and stability. However, what if we did not search for that – would our lives be happier and more fulfilled if we were able to find comfort in uncomfortable situations instead?
There is a difference in getting over a fear momentarily and being able to find some comfort in discomfort. If you do a bungie jump you can push through the fear and take the leap of faith – it takes seconds to make that decision which Is more manageable than, let’s say flying. Flying take hours, you wait in the airport, then for the plane to take off and finally to then land. So, you cannot just take the ‘leap of faith’ – it is a calculated and long process. So, how can we do this?
Well, it is finding comfort in an uncomfortable situation. Flying can be a daunting experience. I mean the prospect of flying above ten thousand feet in the air, for multiple hours and in what basically is a tin can is quite unnerving. But, we do it because we know that on the other side of that discomfort, we will land in a beautiful destination that we would never see if could not get on that plane.
So, instead of searching for comfort in 2021, I decided to push myself even further out of my ‘comfort zone’ and challenge myself with the hope that by the end i will be able to be comfortable in discomfort while building a tougher mindset along the way. My overall goal it to be able to find comfort in a prolonged uncomfortable situation. So, at the start of the year I wrote down everything that may put me in those situations so that I can practice, such as; running more than thirty miles, swimming more than an hour continuously and starting a blog as a dyslexic.
Building a mindset takes a lot of work but I feel it is more than achievable with perseverance, after all, we never make amazing stories on our couch watching Netflix – get out there and find some discomfort.
